The Post-Party Blues

Party’s over. The people have gone home. The dishwasher is busy making dirty dishes clean and everyone let’s out a sigh of relief. Overstuffed and over-tired. A little time to check on the forums followed by a walk. Thank God, it’s cooled off.

I think I like this w.bloggar thing. There’s a cool blogging plug-in for Windows Media Player 9 that let’s you easily insert your currently playing track, like this:

Will blogging become like a virtual (and pointless) arms race? With each blogger out to out-do the other with the niftiest tricks? Oh how the black hole tugs…

Happy September 11th!

September 11th. Could there be a worse date for a birthday? My daughter turns 20 in a few days. On September 11th, to be precise. We’ll be celebrating today, thankfully. I wonder if the sobriety of 9/11 will ever wear off?

In keeping with the family festivities, we’ve got a boatload of people coming over. My wife’s brother, his girlfriend and five kids, my youngest son’s girlfriend, who also happens to be one of my daughter’s closest friends from ballet, and my mother- and father-in-law. Chicken ka-bobs are the order of the day, and being that it’s my “free” day, I’ll be imbibiing one or two cold cervezas.

Oh and I’m writing this with w.bloggar as an experiment. I can feel myself getting sucked into the vortex of MT add-ons and doo-dads. What a dork!

Well, having polished off a cold refreshing beverage (after working up a sweat trimming the hedges), I’m off to tackle one of my favorite things: hosing off the backyard patio. And I mean every word of it. There’s something cathartic about the cool water washing away the dirt and pepper-tree droppings… cool mist wafting about in the otherwise blazing day. Ahhh.

Automating the Soccer Site

The site I built last year for my youngest son’s high school soccer team needs to be automated. He’s a senior this year, and had decided he’s had enough of futbol for his lifetime. He played since he was four, so I guess I can cut him some slack.

At any rate, I spent a fair amount of time building it and maintaining the site last season. It’s mostly static, although it does make extensive use of include files. My goal is to continue supporting the site, but minimize my personal time commitment.

How will I do it? I’m hoping I’ll be able to adapt the current look and feel to Invision Power Boards, with IPB Dynamic Lite as the front door to the site.

I really like the configurability of IPB, but I’ve never delved into it’s skinning capabilities. I’m pretty happy with the default style, but the colors need to be modified to match the school’s colors: red and black.

I’ll keep you posted. Maybe this die-hard ASP codehead will become a PHP convert yet!

Style

I like the way Moveable Type uses cascading style sheets (CSS) to control the look of the site so completely. While I’m not content to use the default styles available, it is amazing to see the power of CSS at work.

I’m currently trying out the Rusty style. Finally a respite from all the blue in my web world.

Graduation

Having passed the initial hurdles of installing MT on Windows, I now need to find a real purpose. Make no mistake; I have no aspirations for the blogsphere. This place is purely self-serving.

I just need to find what it can do for me.
