Pressurized

Projects are piling up all around me, which is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because, well, it’s better than having no work at all. A curse in that if I’m awake, ante a good chance I’m working. And if I’m not working, I probably should be.

In spite of the workload, I found some time to experiment. I’ve added a couple of new items to the right-hand column. Now you can see what DVDs I’ve currently checked out from
Netflix, as well as the songs I’ve recently played using WinAmp. The WinAmp thing needs some work, because it’s not dynamically updating the list (yet). But it will be soon.

Now… time to get back to work.

Grrrrrrrr…

Frustrating when things don’t go smoothly, but not entirely surprising. This blog runs on a Windows server. Most Moveable Type blogs, judging by the discussions in their support forums, are run on *nix servers. This in itself is not a huge problem, but gets frustrating when the occasional problem occurs and you’re searching for help. All of the “answers” reference *nix solutions; not Windows. Serves me right for running atop M$, eh?

Breakfast at the Embassy

Drive five hours up the coast: check.
Move son into his dorm: check.
Meet his roommate: check.
Embib free booze at hotel happy hour: check.
Devour Wilde Bread at Woodstock Pizza: check.
Crash at hotel after too-long day: check.

Son spent his first night in his new digs, and true to form, we cannot reach him. All the brainpower at Nokia can’t figure out how to make him actually answer the phone. Ah well. Looks like he won’t be joining us for breakfast at the Embassy. Time for me to throw back some hot black coffee and an egg or two.

We’re going to pump you up!

It’s been Monday all day long.

The first workday of the week always seems to take a bit longer to get warmed up. Today was no exception. Alarm clock rang at the ungodly hour of 5 AM; rolled out of bed at 5:15. Hit the road at 6 AM to drop my youngest off at school (his first class starts at 6:30). Traffic over the coastal mountains was backed up for five miles as I snaked my way into OC.

Second cup of java at 8 AM. First meeting at 9:30. Etcetera. Get home, whip up some burritos with leftover steak. Check the forums and the blessed AdSense reports. Traffic seems to be down by 20% today. I’m not the only one off to a slow start.

Finally at 9:40 I manage to drag my sorry butt out to the garage to lift weights for 45 minutes. Now I’m pumped. Which reminds me of the old SNL skit that seemed to imitate a certain Austrian strongman that’s in the news here recently. Hell, I wouldn’t mess with that governor! But I bet his Mondays start slow, too.

The Post-Party Blues

Party’s over. The people have gone home. The dishwasher is busy making dirty dishes clean and everyone let’s out a sigh of relief. Overstuffed and over-tired. A little time to check on the forums followed by a walk. Thank God, it’s cooled off.

I think I like this w.bloggar thing. There’s a cool blogging plug-in for Windows Media Player 9 that let’s you easily insert your currently playing track, like this:

Will blogging become like a virtual (and pointless) arms race? With each blogger out to out-do the other with the niftiest tricks? Oh how the black hole tugs…

Happy September 11th!

September 11th. Could there be a worse date for a birthday? My daughter turns 20 in a few days. On September 11th, to be precise. We’ll be celebrating today, thankfully. I wonder if the sobriety of 9/11 will ever wear off?

In keeping with the family festivities, we’ve got a boatload of people coming over. My wife’s brother, his girlfriend and five kids, my youngest son’s girlfriend, who also happens to be one of my daughter’s closest friends from ballet, and my mother- and father-in-law. Chicken ka-bobs are the order of the day, and being that it’s my “free” day, I’ll be imbibiing one or two cold cervezas.

Oh and I’m writing this with w.bloggar as an experiment. I can feel myself getting sucked into the vortex of MT add-ons and doo-dads. What a dork!

Well, having polished off a cold refreshing beverage (after working up a sweat trimming the hedges), I’m off to tackle one of my favorite things: hosing off the backyard patio. And I mean every word of it. There’s something cathartic about the cool water washing away the dirt and pepper-tree droppings… cool mist wafting about in the otherwise blazing day. Ahhh.
