Machine Shop Tools - Jeff Hester

This is not my typical post.

My father-in-law passed recently, leaving a veritable treasure trove of metalworking and woodworking machines, tools and accessories collected over decades. He had some great machinery, all meticulously cared for.

And it’s all for sale.

I’m listing it here to help my wife and her family figure out what the heck to do with this amazing collection of machines, tools and accessories. All of it based in his workshop in the basement of his home near Silver Spring, Maryland. I’m hoping someone from a group like the Chesapeake Area Metalworking Society or similar group or club might be interested. If you know of a group or person who might be, please let me know in the comments.

Clausing 12-inch Lathe

Model 5913 – Originally purchased in 1972. This is a beast of a machine, with many accessories. And of course, the original manual, with notes from the owner. Compare to this Model 5913 listed on Ebay for $2350.

Clausing Horizontal Mill

Model 8551 – Compare to this bench top horizontal milling machine on Ebay for $2650.

“A well-thought-out, strongly-made machine, the Clausing horizontal miller had a stiffly-braced, one-piece cast iron column that carried twin, solid-steel bars to act as the horizontal arbor support. The alloy-steel spindle, with a hardened 30 A.S.A. (International) taper nose, ran in lubricated-for life 3.5” diameter Timken taper roller bearings and carried a helical, lathe-like “backgear” assembly (running in an oil bath) that multiplied the torque available by approximately 6 and provided a slip-free, high-torque drive to the slower speeds.” lathes.co.uk

Oh yeah, that’s a Wilton 11701 3-Axis Precision Tilting Vise that retails for $725.

Model 1764 – Compare to this one on Ebay for $1600. And yes, that’s a Foredom Series SR Flex Shaft Bench Motor that retails for $273 sharing the workspace.
